Philosophy also observes that all religious thought, in order to make its veracity plausible, refers to an unknowable metaphysical entity that governs everything, although it is probably born of the intolerability of the unknown. The mid-1990s saw the emergence of a new science in the international scientific community - neurotheology - the exploration of the intricacies of the human brain for so-called "archaic" mental mechanisms that lead mankind to believe in the existence of gods. A great deal of research is being carried out to demonstrate that the human brain is "programmed to believe". In the face of philosophical and scientific thought, Paul Toupet's works offer a surrealist and poetic alternative in which the force of attraction of religion is questioned, and the elasticity of the polysemous notion of paganism explored. In so doing, the artist puts forward a hypothesis: his works may embody an intermediary between mind and heart; they may provoke, through the scenes they depict, a sensory stimulus in the visitor: "What do we really believe in?" "Croyance.s - Au cœur de l'invisible, des sculptures pour l'âme" proposes a way of apprehending the sacred (or divine) on a human scale, a syncretic celebration of the individual imagination in which the common core that makes up our source-history is revealed.
