For over 20 years, Paul Toupet has been developing his work in the shadow of his childhood, where he was brought up to respect the most diverse beliefs and the different peoples who practice them. This open-mindedness has led to the emergence of an original sculptural expression, identifying a unified civilization focused on an ideal of peace. The artist depicts masked children in various non-chronological series. Play is the backbone of this work, encoding postures and intentions, setting up a complex weave of tensions: gentle innocence and tender naiveté set against a powerful dynamic of postures; the use of rough materials adjusted to childlike brutality; the proposition of the mask as an essential tool of empathy and attachment set against the anonymizing mask and object of rupture.
