Description
Solo show Galerie Du Bas - Halle Saint Pierre, Paris, France PAUL TOUPET had no academic training. His work stems from a triple impulse: autobiographical, autofictional and mystical. The family home where he grew up is scattered with works from the collection of his parents, who were great lovers of primitive art. Spurred on by this free, raw creation, the little boy took to assembling salvaged objects in boxes. As a teenager, he discovered papier-mâché, and developed his practice by sculpting small figures and associating them with various found objects. At the dawn of the 2000s, his sculptures were now conceived on a human scale, and augmented by a complex work of covering and materials (beeswax, wood ash, used fabric and rope, leather, feathers, earth). In 2015, this issue is challenged by what he calls "mon effet céramique", an echo of the medium itself, acting as a mirage - this new surface will encourage the introduction of drawing into his production. Paul Toupet lives and works in Paris, and exhibits in Europe and Japan, in galleries, museums and art centers. His work has been included in numerous private collections, as well as the public collection of the town of Pamiers. Laureate 2022 of the Taylor Foundation (sculpture category), the artist is currently working on a new series: "Flamboyance".
